Accomplishing Goals is as Easy as 1-2-3-4!

New Years isn’t the only time you can sit down and make goals.  It can be done any day, any month, the whole year!  There is always a chance to improve yourself and makes positive changes in your life by accomplishing goals.

Why is change so hard?  It requires us to set new habits, change bad behaviors, or modify our way of thinking.  We get so ingrained in our lifestyle, that altering it can take major effort.  And sometimes, we don’t want to expend any effort on it.

You have to want it bad enough to have the dedication to accomplish your goals!

1. Set a goal.

It can be anything!  Dream big if you want!  Do you want a promotion, save more money, go on a world tour, lose weight, be kinder to others, be more organized, eat better…  there are so many different things our there to accomplish!

2. Decide when you want it accomplished

Your goal will remain just a goal unless you get detailed about it and start planning for it.  This process starts by setting a deadline for when you want to accomplish your dreams.

1 week, 1 month, 1 year, 10 years?  Bigger goals will require more time, smaller goals can be quicker.

Set a date and write it down!

 

3. Set smaller goals

Setting smaller goals will help you accomplish the larger goal!

For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, you cant just go out and run it, right?  So set smaller goals to help build up to the larger one!  Start by training for a 5k and work up to that for a few months. Set daily goals to help you reach the 5k distance.  Start with walking for 20 minutes and slowly progress with longer times.  Then move on to running for 5 minutes at a time, and every week you can add 5 minutes more. Once you have run a 5k, go for a 10k, a half marathon, and finally the full marathon. Create daily goals in every step!

Through planning smaller, achievable goals along the way and setting a deadline for the final goal, you have just accomplished your goal of running a marathon!

What about something like being more organized?  How would you break that one down into smaller goals?

Well, start in one area.  Maybe organize your garage!  Once that is accomplished, move on to another room, like your kitchen or storage room.  Once your home has become more organized, move onto your every day life.  Buy a planner and write down everything that goes on in your day, every meeting you need to be to, every deadline you have, every social gathering scheduled.  You can even have this on your phone so it can go with you everywhere!  Reference this planner several times through out the day.  You could even set a timer to remind your self to look.

No matter the goal, there is a solution by creating smaller doable goals along the way!  Just take the time to sit down and plan it all out, and you can achieve anything!

 

4. Be prepared to give your self time to accomplish your goals.

Do not expect change to happen over night.  Having this mentality will make you frustrated and you will give up before you have accomplished your dreams.  Changing ingrained habits is very difficult and takes some time to truly change a lifestyle.

Be patient with yourself!  Understand that true change will take time to master.

For example, say your goal is to eat better.  Don’t change your whole eating habits overnight.  This will only set you up to quit and revert back to your previous routine.  Instead, work on a smaller goal.  Instead of revamping your whole diet, change one thing at a time.  Start by including more fruits into your day.  Then add vegetables.  Next, you could cut out soda, or try whole wheat products.  There are various ways to accomplish your goal of eating better.  The point is to pick one thing to work on at a time so that you don’t get overwhelmed at quit trying.

 Each step will take time to accomplish!  Be patient with the process if you want lasting change.

If you slip up and slide backwards, don’t freak out! You are human! You already have a victory in that you realized you made a mistake and regret it.  That’s great!!!  Remember that tomorrow is a new day to try again!  Pick up your goals, review them, and reset your mindset to tackle things again, one step at a time.
